Semaphores, and msg queues exist in ALPHA testing currently. They can be gotten
from tsx-11.mit.edu in the pub/linux/patches directory in the ipc.tar.Z file.
You would have to do some patching to get it to work on the current kernel
though. Shared memory is being worked upon by the author currently.

What do mean when you said it wont let you change the permissions? What
error messages does it give you?
Try this and tell me what it says: chmod 777 /dev/ttys0
If you do that as root, you shouldn't have any problems changing the
permissions.

Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 19:23:42 GMT
It is my eventual aim to have my Linux setup running a suite of DNA sequence
analysis programs for use by my research group. This is currently being done on
Macs used as terminals onto remote Unix boxes. Within six months we will have an
ethernet and I hope to connect the box up to the rest of the world! So now you
know the background, and here is the problem: We have huge amounts of data being
put onto Macintosh floppies, later uploaded (slowly!) to Unix machines. Ideally
I would love to be able to shove the mac disk into my PC and type
mount [blah blah] -t applemac
and copy them straight onto the Linux machine. Are there any plans afoot to
allow Linux to read Mac format disks?

Check to make sure xterm and the X386 binary are setuid root.
If you ls -l them you should see:
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel 123908 Dec 5 23:33 xterm
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel 893956 Dec 5 23:33 X386
The group can be different depending on how you installed everything.
The main thing, is that the s is there on the 4th character.
If it isn't, do the next 2 commands:
chmod 4755 /usr/X386/bin/xterm
chmod 4755 /usr/X386/bin/X386
That should fix any problems. Oh yea, make sure /tmp has the right permissions
also. It should be read-writable by anyone with the sticky bit set also.
Do a chmod 1777 /tmp to make sure.

I have found that using compressed fonts was a big mistake. Just do:
cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
chmod u+w *
mkfontdir
cd /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
chmod u+w *

Subject: What could/should I have done? HD & Trident 8900
Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 21:02:53 GMT
Last night I decided to go ahead a trust a hard drive I picked up
so I would have room for X and I ran into a few problems which I
solved via the painful/kludge route, now I want to know if there
was a better way.
First off, I am using an adaptec RLL cotroller with a 65 Meg hda
and I added a similiar 65 Meg hdb.
Problem One:
After low lever formating the new drive with the ROM routines on the
controller, I tried to boot linux to fdisk and mkfs it and it
would not boot due a kernal panic not able to mount /. After
booting with the a1 and a2 disks, a "fdisk /dev/hda" then printing
the partition tabled showed the wrong number of heads/cyl/sectors.
If I went into the (expert/extended) fdisk options and changed
these back, then a verify reported ok, but this information was
not saved.
I solved the probelm by reformating the hda drive and reinstalling
the entire SLS distribution, updating the kernal, and spending
4 hours reconfiguring (who needs backups, I'll just reinstall - NOT).
So, once the hard disk geometry gets messed up, is there a way
to rewrite it? Where is is stored?
Problem Two.
Before rebuilding the current kernel, I wanted to move /usr/src
to a partition on the new drive so a mounted that partition
on /mnt2 and moved all the files over there and deleted them
from hda but left the directory /usr/src. I unmounted /mnt2
and tried to mount it as /usr/src but this yeiled PWD - directory
not found errors all over the place but did show the files.
I now mount it as /mnt2 and have a symbolic link from /usr/src to
/mnt2. Is this the way it's done in unix? What did I not do, or
do that I should not have if this is not the case. After
installing X I will want to move some more direcories to partitions
on hdb so I need to know the "proper" way to do it if there is one.
Potential Problem Three.
I plan to attack installing X on a trident 8900C card tonight
so any/all advice or horror stories you have on this would
all be appreciated. I plan to use the current x1-x8 disks from
SLS, anyone aware of any problems associated with them?
Thanks.

I had that same problem, too. The problem was that the SVGA selection
apparently leaves some junk in the keyboard controller that nobody
reads, and the controller doesn't like this. So I added this little
function to boot/setup.S to flush the 8042 output register before
going into protected mode, and it definitely cured the problem.

Subject: X / Enhanced VGA Local Bus ET4000
Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1992 21:05:30 GMT
Hi all,
In my story of working towards having a desktop pc running Linux/X/TCP/IP a
new twist has developed that now has to be dealt with.
It seems that when ordering my pc some weeks ago there was misunderstanding
between myself and the co. who sent me the pc. Thinking that a Tseng Labs
ET4000 card was being sent along with the pc, all seemed well. Well, it turns
out they sent me the Enhanced VGA et4000 local bus (I did know it was local
bus).
This may not have turned out to be a potential problem, but after reading the
modegen.txt, modeDB.txt, and the card manual more closely it became clear that
this card has the clock generator chip. Now, this clock generator is mentioned
as being a problem because the clock dots continually chang and this, of course
causes problems with using X. I suppose this an insurmountable problem because
one has to have access to program source to be able to use the card effective-
ly, right?
When my mistake in the ordering became fully realized, a call to the co. was
placed and, after some discussion, he agreed to send me a 2-the-MAX VGA 4000
card. We agreed that after trying out the other card I could send back the one
not needed and the difference would be credited to me, if there is any.
Is it hopeless to try to use the local bus card with the clock generator or
woould I be better off just using the 2-the-MAX card? What are the differences
in performance with the local bus with X and without local bus? Is it enough
to matter?
One more thing :-), the modegen.txt file mentions running 'startx.notcp 2>
clocks.X. After doing this, all that happens is that a file is produced that
says "startx.notcp: command not found". Is this because of this card and X
not recognizing it?
Thanks for your patience with this long winded post, :-).

I've pulled down a complete set of disks from tsx-11 Friday afternoon. After
going through the install on Saturday, I have a few questions/comments:
1) Any idea when pl6 will be incorporated? Or will it be after a few of
the bug report(s) come whizzing by the newsgroup...?
2) Seems like the 'adduser' (and associated commands) got renamed to
'useradd' (and alike). I had a little fun trying to add another user;
seems that when i typed in 'useradd bob', the command took off...but
didn't request an initial password. I looked in /etc/shadow, and saw
a '!' in the password field. Does this mean that a sysadmin would have
to do the useradd, then a password uid to set the login?
3) related issue; the home directory was not created for bob; i.e.
/home/bob didn't exist. had to create it manually...
4) I haven't looked yet, but has the latest version of lilo been
ported in?
5) I'm seeing a 'can't exec /etc/umount -- trying umount' msg show up
when I issue shutdown. a missing link?

Subject: Proposal for debug Xlinux.8514
Date: 7 Dec 92 21:33:33 GMT
After having Linux for more than a month, I still haven't
been able to get X working with my ATI Ultra card. When
I type startx, I simply get the message "giving up".
I would like to propose compiling a debug version of
Xlinux.8514 that could be run on the debugger and/or
with more informative diagnostic statements than
"giving up". I got the 8514-src file but it said to use
xsrc1.1 file which is not on any archive site anymore.
What do I need to compile a new executable ? I have the
current SLS from wuarchive. I think this would be a
worthwhile project and maybe compile a debug version of
X386 too. Many of the questions posted on comp.os.linux
consist of "X won't start and I don't have a clue"
By the way when I first got Xlinux.8514 it complained
that it couldn't find libc.sh.2.2.2 and libm.sh.2.2.2 .
I thought, " OK I'll link those to the current libs".
That eliminated the messages, but leads to the "giving up"
message. J.Chacon's post said that the 2.2.2 libs could
be found at nic.funet.fi in pub/OS/Linux/bin/gcc/.OLD,
I found libc there but not libm. I don't know if
this is related to X failing or not. I am using the
Xconfig which came with Xlinux.8514, with the changes
suggested in README and README.2nd. I have 16MB ram so
I haven't bothered with swap space. I don't think any
swapping is necessary for X to start up, but could it
cause a failure anyway? I also think much better
documentation is needed on where the mysterious numbers
in Xconfig come from. They don't seem to correspond to
anything in the video card or monitor manuals. I am a Unix
system administrator and programmer, but I don't know
much about video cards (and don't really want to know).

No problems with the actual *USE* of the mouse as of pl4, *HOWEVER*--if
I terminate a program using the mouse via control C, my keyboard goes
away, permanently. If I trap SIGINT and terminate normally, the problem
does not occur. And, I have managed to figure out via experimentation,

Werner or Linus,
I'm having the following problems with pl5 and pl6 on my CompuAdd
Express 425CXL. It's a Cyrix 486slc machine, with math coprocessor, 8MB
of RAM, VGA-like display, 120MB hard drive (IDE), two serial ports (one
of them a modem, ttys0 and ttys1).
The last release I ran successfully was from SLS; it was pl4. The pl5 I
tried is from H.J. Lu's new bootable root disk. Lilo release is 6,
which I've been using prior to pl5 and pl6 of the kernel.
I want to stress that 0.98pl4 ran just fine on this computer, and
pl5/pl6 do not. Anyway, THANKS for any help you can provide, and THANKS
MUCH FOR AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT. :-)
Problems:
(1) I've recompiled pl6 using the appropriate variable in the Makefile
to turn off keyboard locking, and it doesn't seem to work--numeric lock
stays on by default. I've used this feature successfully from its
inception through 0.98pl4....
(2) When I boot off the HLU bootable root floppy, the system comes up
fine. When I set up to boot off the hard drive, I get "Unable to handle
kernel paging request at address..." and a bunch of messages.
(3) When I compiled pl6, it seemed to boot fine off floppy several times
(though at one point, it started rebooting over and over again, early in
the boot load process). It consistently bombs off when I set up this
new release to boot directly off the hard disk. Below, I provide the
complete screen I get when I try to boot pl6 off the hard drive:

Has anyone gotten the dos emulation to work with quicken? This would be all I
need right now to get rid of my dos partition forever.....

Subject: term
Date: 7 Dec 92 21:43:53 GMT
has anyone else had difficulties with term? i haven't yet been able
to get it going well enough to allow any form of login from the remote
system to linux. neither tredir or trsh will last long enough. both
of these, and upload from linux->remote (and xconn) cause term to
freeze with an endless series of timeouts. it seems as if any amount
of data trying to be sent more than a few chars at a time from linux
to the remote term either doesn't get sent or doesn't get acknowledged
by the remote term.
if anyone has had any experiences with something like this, please
tell me anything yuo know! (i would kill to get my system receiving
telnets so i can tinker over the holidays...)
btw my remote system is a sparcstation of some sort running sunos4.1
everything on every end passes the `test' test, so i assume it's not a
compiler error but a timing prob or some such thing...

Well, I have a 386-40 AMD with 8 megs of ram, all are 3-chip 70ns simms, a
120Meg and a 41Meg IDE hard disks and AMI bios. Linux does occasionally
(three times in the last month) give me a register dump. It only does
it once, then continues with the loading. No problems. I have a bit of
trouble with the disk linux is on, so I thought it may be that.
